A 13-year-old boy from Deltona has been apprehended and charged in connection with a series of car break-ins after his mother found a stolen firearm concealed near their residence. The incidents occurred between March 27 and April 11 on various streets along Elkcam Boulevard in Deltona. Although video surveillance footage in the area was of poor quality, it captured an individual believed to be the suspect, described as a thin male wearing a hoodie and riding a bicycle.

According to a release, deputies responded to a report of a found firearm on Wednesday. The reporting person told deputies she had been having behavioral issues with her son, which led to her searching her property for money he stole from her when she found a 9mm pistol on the side of the house near an air conditioning unit.

Following the discovery, the concerned mother contacted law enforcement. Upon reviewing the suspects' description and comparing it with the previously captured footage, detectives realized they matched. Furthermore, upon reviewing video footage from a neighboring residence, they observed the boy leaving his home on the nights when several burglaries had taken place, wearing the same attire as the suspect.

Upon learning of the call to law enforcement, the young suspect hastily packed a bag and ran away to his great-grandmother's house. During questioning, he admitted to committing the car break-ins, stealing a package, and confessed to taking the pistol from a pickup truck near his residence.

As a result, the 13-year-old faces charges of armed burglary to a conveyance, grand theft of a firearm, four counts of burglary to a conveyance, and four counts of petit theft. He was transported to the Volusia Family Resource Center for processing and later transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
